Natural RemedyKnock Years Off Your Age With A Healthy Skin

You probably already know that skin is the largest organ in your body. Its cells are continually being replaced as they're lost due to wear and tear, so it's never too late, or too early, to think about skin care. When you consider the main functions of skin you'll soon see why looking after it is so important.

1) To form a barrier between the environment and your body's internal organs, protecting them from sunlight, injury and infection.

2) To sense touch, temperature, pain, pressure and itching.

3) Temperature control by sweating or conserving heat.

4) Waterproofing.

So, to perform all these functions - as well as the one we often think of first, how we look, taking good care of your skin is vital.

There are many attacks on our skin every day; sun, wind, lack of proper hydration or care. Fairly soon you will look in the mirror and wonder when your skin started to look so dull or when the wrinkles started to appear.

The risks of summer sun are well publicised - less is written about winter problems. Winter is a wonderful time of the year - holidays, warm fires, crisp air, and for many, fresh fallen snow. But the colder temperature and lower humidity affect the condition of your skin.

As with most things in life, prevention is better than a cure. However, for those who have not had eight hours sleep every night, moisturized regularly, stayed out of the sun and never touched alcohol what is needed is to reduce further aging and regain a more vibrant appearance. Where to start?

NUTRITION and HYDRATION

As many people are aware, what goes inside will show on the outside. The best prevention from aging skin is to provide your body with a proper diet of healthy fresh foods as well as sufficient hydration. Alcohol and caffeine cause dehydration and should be limited.

Drinking plenty of water throughout the day will improve the texture of your skin and fight dry skin. Healthy foods can provide the vitamin C and E that are so rich in antioxidants. Add to the steps noted above a good night's sleep and you are on your way to getting the fresh, vibrant skin you desire! Good quality skin care products can really make a noticeable difference.

SUNSCREEN

No article on skin would be complete without mention of sunscreen. So if you live in, or are heading off to, sunnier climes - whether you're 18 or 58, it is vital to protect skin from the damage of the sun. While the dangers were not as well known years ago (or so severe) it's only common sense for everyone to safeguard the sensitive skin on their face from the harsh damage caused by the UV rays from the sun.

Whenever you're outside, even on a sunny winter's day, use a moisturizer or foundation with a sunscreen that has an SPF of 15 or higher every day. UVA and UVB rays contribute to wrinkles and burns not to mention the possibility of skin cancer.

MOISTURIZER

As skin ages it tends to become drier. Dry skin will show more wrinkles than well hydrated skin. Moisturizers create a barrier that keeps the skin from losing essential water.

The moisturizers available today are far more luxurious than the cold creams of yesterday. Starting a moisturizing routine will help your skin retain hydration which contributes to a supple texture reducing the appearance of fine lines.

Moisturizers also prepare the skin for the application of makeup which will apply smoother and create a fine finish without cracking or flaking.

ANTIOXIDANTS

Pollution in the air and chemicals in our food release free radicals into our bodies. Free radicals break down the collagen and elastin in your skin which leads to wrinkles and sagging. Antioxidants in your facial products or in supplements will protect the collagen and elastin which keeps skin firm and supple.

AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acids)

AHA comes in many forms, from store bought creams to dermatologist applied formulations. The AHA sloughs off skin in what is commonly called a 'peel'. A mild formula used at home can treat fine lines to great effect.

There's far more to skin-care than I've been able to cover in this short article, but I hope I have stimulated your interest to look further into simple skin care routines to help you look younger than you really are.

NutritionLove and Communication - Five Languages for Healthy Relationships

When we are not feeling loved, valued and cared for, many of us tend to be crankier, more depressed, more sure something is our fault or their fault or somebody's fault. We can be less patient, and life can seem more difficult. Some of us pass this off as a bad day, a really long week, a rough time. Without oversimplifying or discounting real tragedy, I?d like to offer a way to look at this part of our lives that can help.

In the book The Five Love Languages, Dr. Gary Chapman points out that we all have ways we like to be shown that we are loved, valued, or cared about, but they are not necessarily the same as the way others like to be shown these things. The five ways outlined in this book are:

  • Words of Affirmation (saying encouraging things)

  • Quality Time (spending undivided time with the person)

  • Gifts (physical tokens of appreciation--can be small, but must not have any expectation or condition attached to them)

  • Acts of Service (doing things for someone in appreciation or to help)

  • Physical Touch (appropriate and loving touch)

Can you see where this may be a problem if you are used to ?speaking? love (or value or caring) in Words of Affirmation, but your partner, friend, or child is just longing to ?hear? love (or value or caring) in Acts of Service? Kind of like you?re speaking Italian and your partner, friend, or child is listening for French.

Communication in relationships can leave us feeling exquisitely intimate at best or infuriated and humiliated at worst. George Bernard Shaw said, ?The single biggest problem with communication is the illusion that it has taken place.? If we are speaking different love languages, this illusion may not get us where we truly want to be with each other.

There are other benefits to being aware of the love language of our loved ones and ourselves. For instance, when we are feeling certain of being loved, valued, and cared for, then many of us tend to act more caring and positively toward others. Tasks seem easier to accomplish; we have more patience with the things that go differently than we expected. Many of us find it easier to genuinely give of our time, energy, and resources in a loving and caring manner.

In Eat, Pray, Love, author Elizabeth Gilbert shares a story about a friend whose philosophy is that unhappy people cause all the sorrow and trouble in the world. According to this philosophy, when we are unhappy (or don't feel loved, valued or cared for), we tend to share our misery with those around us. She says, ?Clearing out all of your misery gets you out of the way. You cease being an obstacle, not only to yourself but to everyone else. Only then are you free to serve and enjoy other people.?

It's important for each of us to know how we like to have our value expressed to us by others, and to let those who care about us know that. It's also important for us to think about the ways others may be showing us they value us and care for us that maybe we haven't been counting because it's not the way we're used to listening or watching for this information. In turn, it's important for us to notice this about the people we care about, so we can offer our love, value, and care to them in ways they can receive. This is important with our colleagues, our friends, our families, our communities, and our world.

If you want more info, you can check out Dr. Chapman's books, which not only include his book mentioned above, but also ones about the 5 Love Languages for Children, Teenagers, and Apologies. You can see a general overview and take a quick quiz to see what your love language by clicking on five love languages. In the words of Jackie DeShannon, Randy Myers, and Jimmy Holiday--"put a little love in your heart...and the world will be a better place."
